Did you know that your body communicates even before you open your mouth? The content of words accounts for only 7% of communication, while gestures account for 55%!
This means that your posture, your intonation or the way you express yourself gesturally face-to-face, in public, in front of a room or on camera, can have an impact on others that you wouldn't necessarily have wished for. Do you know the phrase: "His silence spoke volumes..."?
Body awareness
It can happen that an important executive or even a company director is unable to communicate his or her intentions effectively to his or her team due to a lack of charisma, or even because of an overly strong presence. This situation can become embarrassing in the long term, which is why it's so important to get to know yourself, to be aware of what you project and how you should be perceived.
Out of ignorance, we all sometimes send out a message contrary to our intention. In a way, it's because we're not predisposed to make the effort to engage our bodies in conveying the information we want. Too often, we only think about the words of our speech or what we want to say before we communicate. Rarely do we take the time to think about how to convey our message with the right gait, posture and even intonation. People listening to a speech hear the words, but don't necessarily grasp the full import of the message being conveyed. As a species with a highly developed oral language, we tend to overlook the rest. And yet, by observing animals, we become aware of the importance of body language.
Actors, lawyers, customs officers and police officers all know the meaning and significance of this type of language. A person in an important position, likely to speak often in public, to employees or to the media, should learn the signs of body language and their impact on the audience. In this way, he or she will be able to use all three levels of communication simultaneously, so that his or her message has greater impact: words, tone and gestures.
Learn to use your body properly
You don't have to become a synergology pro to become aware of the proper use of your body and to know how to communicate well. A two- or three-hour workshop including filming sessions with analysis and commentary, followed by a few minutes of practice at home, can be enough to awaken a candidate and make him or her effective in public speaking.
The training we provide for our clients is tailor-made for each of them, according to their strengths and weaknesses. Most of the time, however, they cover a common set of details: the study of the candidate's posture, the way he uses his hands while speaking, the way he looks at his audience, the use of his intonation and the elimination of tics. These details are taken into consideration according to the type of performance we are asked to achieve.
